A starry night, and full moon, beside Lake Fjällgrycken in Sweden. It was
around minus 15 Celsius, and if there was anyone peeking through their
curtains, they probably thought I was totally nuts! Aluminium tripods are
not fun to handle at such temperatures.

My first experiment with fake infrared……..after reading how to do it in
Martin Evening’s excellent book on Lightroom.

When I got to the top, I thought I’d left it too late, and that the soft
evening sun was going to remain behind heavy, dark clouds. Then it
miraculously emerged for perhaps just two minutes. Near horizontal shafts of
warm, beautiful light, like the of a beam of light coming from a lighthouse,
lit up the cairn. A special, strangely exciting, photographic moment.

Loch Kindar, south of New Abbey, Dumfries & Galloway. I was on my way up
the nearby hill, called Criffel. My tripod was too heavy to take along, but
if I had, I’d have thought more about my camera settings, and used f/11 for
more depth of field. I need to find the money for a carbon fibre Gitzo
Explorer!

Not much more to say about it, except ISO100, 200mm, f/4 at 1/25sec. Could
have been sharper, but still I quite like it.

Leaving Gothenburg. The sundeck plexiglass had an mottled texture which made
the view from the ship rather surreal. Taken with my old Pentax istDS….not
the quality of the 5D, but easier to carry on holiday.

This evening, 15th April, on the way home from Powfoot.

Perhaps the weirdest landscape I’ve ever taken…a strange juxstaposition of
rolling field, and almost exotic domestic architecture. And, of course, you
can’t see it, but there is also a crow sitting on the wire next the
telegraph pole. It reminds me of an illustration from a children’s book.

I have nice memories of this place……my parents used to belong to a
sailing club just north of Millarochy Bay, so we spent most weekends there.

I liked the muted colours, and the softness of the light.

Taken through the glass at the superb Seagram Building, New York City. I
liked the reflection of the tree. Mies Van der Rohe, the “less is more’
man, still was partial to some beautiful planting, to add a hint of softness
to his strict, geometric forms.

It still fascinates me how a photograph can freeze an instant in time. This
is Bryant Square, New York City at 13.06 local time on the 5th May 2007. A
beautiful space.

Some burnout to the sky that I couldn’t quite fix, but still I quite like
it.

Yesterday evening there was the most amazing light. The sky got so dark,
and yet the sun still got through. The loch mirrored the green fields and
the trees. The colours looked unreal in their intensity. I thought, ‘
Ansell Adams got light like this most days, but it’s the first time I’ve
seen it..’ Perhaps that’s what makes landscape photography so challenging?

I like this image - it captured the tranquillity of a perfect evening.

A Swedish author had written about how beautiful the Swedish red painted
houses had looked to her when returning home from Denmark in the small hours
of the morning. So I thought I’d try to capture that atmosphere - though it
did involve getting up at 3.45am!
