Muslim Housing in Rochdale

I really felt rather strange about being commissioned to photograph a new
housing project which is. in effect, a Muslim enclave. But then, once on
site I was made totally welcome, and to walk around with £4k’s worth of
gear, I felt very safe. I was even asked in for tea.

Each 3 storey unit was divided into 2 parts – one for the men, and one for
the women. The young Muslim men posed in flash cars, whereas the ladies
walked with their eyes straight ahead, focussed somewhere in the middle
distance. And yet the people seemed very relaxed and happy, so I came away
feeling my pre-conceptions had been mostly erased.
