It was very dim and peaceful to sit here. From apparently from inside the
pagoda roofed structure on the left, came the sound of a human voice, and
the subtle clinking sound of glass. We were sure that we were interrupting
a monk at prayer. But then this guy emerged, complete with ipod. and
it became clear that he was doing a bit of dusting!
I asked if I could take some photographs, and he helpfully offered to put
the lights on, but I thought that might ruin the atmosphere.
So suddenly the 5D Mk 2 came into it’s own, allowing me to shoot at high
ISO’s.

This is an atmospheric, spooky place. You certainly wouldn’t want to go
there at night! Today, the precipitous paths felt very dodgy after the
recent floods.

Shot 10 minutes after the previous image. It was around noon, and the light
was far too harsh for general landscape stuff, but this image was OK. My
recent major criterion for the success or otherwise of an image seems to be,
‘ Is it worth printing out to A3+ …….otherwise why keep it?’

Sunshine and a beautiful snow clad landscape inspires you to go out for
lengthy walks. As usual I took my camera, but decided in advance not to
take it from my shoulder pack unless I saw something really worthwhile.
Crossing a little stone bridge, we looked down and saw this half frozen
burn, running into the River Annan. The pheasant very considerately
emerged to add some interest.

I find bird photography very tricky……perhaps this is one of my better
efforts.

Now the Mill Loch not only has ice (150mm + thick) but 100mm of snow lying
on top. So where are these poor ducks finding food? Or have they become a
meal for the fox, or the carrion crows?

Although shot in Sweden, this image somehow remind me of holidays in the
Loire valley. Recently I find that I often prefer my landscape shots in
black & white.

I really felt rather strange about being commissioned to photograph a new
housing project which is. in effect, a Muslim enclave. But then, once on
site I was made totally welcome, and to walk around with £4k’s worth of
gear, I felt very safe. I was even asked in for tea.
Each 3 storey unit was divided into 2 parts – one for the men, and one for
the women. The young Muslim men posed in flash cars, whereas the ladies
walked with their eyes straight ahead, focussed somewhere in the middle
distance. And yet the people seemed very relaxed and happy, so I came away
feeling my pre-conceptions had been mostly erased.
