A man walks his child home from school. The Empire State Building is framed
in the background by the steelwork of the bridge. Yet again I was struck by
the relaxed pace, and feeling of safety in New York City.

There is a childlike excitment to be had standing with all the other tourists on the Empire State Building’s viewing platform as night approaches. Suddenly somebody say’s, ‘Oh look, they’ve put the lights on the Chrysler Building!’ Then you see this beautiful building of fairytale elegance. How sad for the architect of this exceptional structure that old man Chrysler refused to pay his professional fees, because, he alleged, the architect had taken a back-hander from the contractor.

This was taken on the 19th May 2007, the day before the cooling towers were demolished. It’s strange, I always thought of them as menacing, sinister objects on the local skyline, but to see them demolished was quite sad, as they are beautiful structures.

Look at the intense, almost angry stare of the passengers, especially the
young boy. Their apparent lack of prosperity, seems a cruel contrast to the
immense wealth of the Wall Street area.

Yip, this is absolutely my first squeeze of the shutter on my Canon 5D when
we arrived in New York. How ornate some of the buildings are. Like most
people, I suppose, I found myself for the first few hours go, ‘Wow, look at
that !’
